5 Family Friendly Outdoor Activities In Chicago

Hello, June—we’ve been waiting for you. Now that it’s finally beautiful in Chicago, it’s time to get outdoors and enjoy the ample sunshine with a few outdoor activities in Chicago for the whole family. Whether you’re looking to explore a new area, attend a festival, play sports in the park, or lay out on the beach, there’s plenty to do during the summertime in Chicago.

And, as you’ll soon see, the whole city will light up. Here are 5 outdoor activities to enjoy this summer that the whole family will love.

Play Sports In The Park

Chicago is known for having a diverse array of recreational sporting events and grassy areas. Between Maggie Daley Park, Millennium Park, Oz Park, and Lincoln Park Conservatory, among others, there’s enough nature to go around and opportunity for outdoor activities in Chicago. Taking the kids out for a game of capture the flag or baseball fits well in the summertime, as it’s a great way to stay active and bond with the family.

Head To Navy Pier

That historic Ferris wheel will really shine amidst the Chicago sunshine, right along the skyline. Directly off of Lake Michigan, Navy Pier in Chicago is easy to get to and boasts a stunning view. Plus, the rides, eateries, beer garden, and shows are pretty incredible, as well. With enough activities to suit any age, it’s easy to take the family out for a day at Navy Pier, where everyone can find something that brings pleasure.

Listen To Music In Millennium Park

Starting June 12th, the Millennium Park Summer Series will begin—bringing you free music, from a variety of genres, on Monday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer. Among the lineup, some stars include Otis Taylor, Lady Wray, and indie band Hurray. There’s something for everyone. Artists hail from around the world, including Canada, Colombia, and Senegal. It’s an international experience not to be missed.

Be With The Animals

At Lincoln Park Zoo, that is. Throughout the summer, enjoy a Saturday afternoon with the family by wandering through the Lincoln Park Zoo and soaking in the animals’ cuteness. A major, kid-friendly, outdoor activity in Chicago, the zoo also offers some events to mark on your calendar, such as the “Sing Along” with Electric Neil on Wednesdays and Fridays in the summer. And if adults are looking for some extra fun, the Adults Night Out will be on a Thursday evening each month, starting June 8th.

Take A Dip In Crown Fountain

The Crown Fountain in Millennium Park is the perfect place to cool off and let the kids play outside. Taking a dip in the community area of the park is fun for anyone, especially small children (the water pours out of the mouths of the characters—a stimulating phenomenon for kids). It’s also enjoyable to watch the changing faces of real-life people, for it’s aesthetic nature. What’s more, it’s a great location for meeting up with other people within the city.
